Der er en farlig gåsesnak ude i Pulken i aften. Det er sædgæs som dominerer koret, men enkelte blisgæs blander sig. Der er kommet markant flere gæs, end her var for blot en uges tid siden. I skumringen talte jeg mindst 600 sædgæs, som fløj ind fra sydøst. De tilbringer dagene på markerne mellem Helge Å og Åhuskärr.
I Pulken derimod, ses for tiden næsten ingen gæs i dagtimerne. Gæssene går i den spirende sæd - måske gemmer de enggræsset til senere? Idag f.eks. 374 bramgæs ved Sjögård, hvor også storkebanden holder til. Sådan lidt hurtigt talte jeg idag 21 projektstorke derovre. De skal nok til at tænke på at komme afsted, hvis ikke storkeprojektet skal igennem en ny prikkerunde...
Men det mest spændende i dagens løb har alligevel været en ung vandrefalk, som jeg opdagede siddende i et elletræ vesterude langs Helge Å. Jeg stod i haven og tjekkede Pulken, som jeg gør så tit; det var hurtigt gjort, for der var ikke andet end et par musvåger, som sad langt ude i vest-Pulken. Den ene sad med halvt udbredte, hængende vinger, hvilket fik den til at se stor ud, så jeg satte lige teleskopet på den, for at sikre mig, at bestemmelsen var korrekt - og det var den, men oppe i et elletræ nærved sad en mindre, hvidhovedet rovfugl, som godtnok lignede en vandrefalk, uden at være aldeles ulig en blå glente. Dén måtte jeg lige zoome ind på og det var rigtignok en vandrefalk, men den lyseste vandrefalk jeg nogensinde har set. Hovedet var stort set hvidt, med fremtrædende, sort banditmaske. Issen var blot svagt stribet, nakken lidt kraftigere tegnet, men med en stor, snehvid plet. Hele hovedets og undersidens bundfarve var kridhvid, og så ud til at være fuldstændig uden gyldenbrune indslag. Markant var også den lysegrå, blot let, koldt bruntonede overgump. Vingerne var koldt gråbrune og halen markant båndet. Mærkeligt. "Sandsynligvis noget calidus". Det er sjovt at skrive, for det er nærmest et mundheld; en jingle som betyder Klaus Malling Olsen og det siger jeg ikke for at gøre mig lystig på Klauses bekostning, for det er det eneste fornuftige at sige til en lyshovedet vandrefalk - og nu er den vittighed forklaret og lagt i graven. Men jeg mener det sgu'.
Der er langt fra min have til elletræerne ved Helge Å, så jeg sprang ind i bilen, i håb om at se fuglen bedre ovre fra Vittskövlevejen.
Men fuglen var fløjet. Fandens; man må faktisk slet ikke bestemme calidus-vandrefalke, så et dokumentationsfoto til at hjælpe efterbestemmelsen havde været vældig godt at have. Derfor siger jeg heller ikke, at det var en tundrafalk, som er racens danske navn, men den må betragtes som en meget god kandidat.
Jeg kørte hjem igen, men ville lige se, om falken mon var kommet tilbage. Det var den ikke, men pludselig hørtes traneskrig fra syd, det er sent, og kan blive årets sidste, så jeg rettede kikkerten mod sydpulken, hvorfra en stor fugl kom flyvende mod mig i silhouet - sølvhejre!
Sølvhejren landede midt ude i kæret, hvor den stod som et lys i den grå dag.
En times tid senere, nu er vi fremme ved klokken 14, var falken tilbage i elletræet og ovennævnte ekspedition gentog sig i detaljer. Men fuglen lader jo til at synes om Pulken, så jeg håber virkelig på at få et billede af den. Giftigt udseende eller ej, den kommer ikke længre uden foto; jeg ringede til Rolf for at høre, om han havde nogle tips til bestemmelse af calidus: "Ja; GLEM DET".

Handbook of the birds of Bolivia
After working on illustrations of plant species from Greenland my attention is now shifting back to the birdlife of Bolivia. A new working session is beginning, and this time hopefully we will complete the work, so that the book can be released.
I am assigned to, among others, hummingbirds, parrots, nightjars and allies and, as this illustration shows, tinamous. It is great being back working with museum specimens, field notes etc. trying to squeeze as much information out of the material as possible. Often I have to base my interpretation of the bird skins on photographs and field observations of related species. This is partly due to the rarity of certain species, but also, when you are in the field, observations are often brief and when it comes to e.g. tinamous merely seeing and identifying the bird is often what must be regarded as a "good observation". It is a question of adding up ones experience and trying to get to grips with things like e.g. how the birds move. How do e.g. Tinamus-species place their feet? Do they raise the crest? How do they move their heads? All these things one has to learn during field observations and sketching and later one can try and look at photographs to determine if what they show correspond with ones "feeling for the bird". I have noticed, that photographs taken under field conditions in dense rainforest often shows the bird much grayer than what you experience in the field and when examining specimens. As you can see much of the work involved when illustrating a book is a process inside ones head.
But loads of material coming out from this process certainly exists, e.g. in the form of sketches, and not least in the form of photographs showing branches, leaves, flowers and little blurry birds in the darkness of neotropical forest cover.
And also in the form of photographs of bird specimens. During my research I have build quite a large collection of photographs of south american bird specimens, wich I should like to make available on the www for other people as well, but that will require something more than this blog.
